The Formation of Otterton Relief in Need Charity (ORINC)

The Otterton Relief in Need Charity (ORINC) was set up on 17 December 1985. It was formed from 6 separate trusts or ‘Gifts’ to Otterton Parish which were amalgamated into ORINC by the Charity Commissioners and the funds invested in Government Stock.  The funds are now invested by the CCLA, the UK's largest charity fund management company.

Anthony Isaack Trust, 13 August 1639

Anthony Isaack gave trustees £120 to buy land in the Parishes of Sidbury, Sidmouth and Otterton. The income from the lands' rental to be used for the benefit of those Parishes. In 1650, a house was built called Church House with a garden and 1 Acre of land. This house was occupied by poor families until it was demolished in 1907. The three terraced houses, seen in Fore Street, were built on the site and were sold. The proceeds of the sale were added to the Otterton Charities.

Henry Austin Trust, 15 December 1701

The Austin (or Awstine) family lived and farmed in East Budleigh and Otterton in the 16th Century. The Otterton branch of the family had their farm where Dukes Close is today. Henry Austin gave £100 to the Trust in 1701 (roughly equal to £20000 today) “the interest the be distributed to the amount of 8/4d every month on a Sunday in Church”. This was only given “to those who do not receive alms of the Parish and such as have many children and are honest and industrious that they attend Church so that God's blessing may be upon them and their children for ever”.

Duke Trust.

In 1745, the Duke family (Lords of the Manor of Otterton) gave £100 to a trust. The interest of which should be distributed annually at Easter to poor parishioners by the Vicar.

Channon’s Gift

Mr Channon gave 10 shillings a year from income from a field in Crediton for the poor of Otterton. He is related to the Searles and Hardings who farmed in Otterton in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Simons Trust.

Ann Simons, the widow of Revd William Simons, Otterton Vicar 1712 – 1782 gave £5 to Revd Thomas Shore, Vicar 1793 – 1822, interest to be distributed among the parish poor. This gift ceased on the death of Revd Shore.

Non Nobis Domine No.1 and No.2 Trusts, 1873 & 1891

These trusts were set up by Revd James Boucher in 1873 and 1891with £538.7s.2d and £520.16s.8d respectively. The were specifically for the Poor of Otterton Parish “to provide fuel, medical aid, food, clothing and especially for any person under 21 years entering a trade or other occupation”.
